HELL RAZAH & SHABAZZ THE DISCIPLE- T.H.U.G. ANGELZ INTERVIEW 2010

BY DEVAMPS

HELL RAZAH

First of all I want to thank yall for taking the time to do this interview.

Razah: NO PROBLEM I ALWAYS GOT TIME FOR MY LISTENERS

For those out there who aren’t too familiar with Hell Razah, can you briefly run through your history and how you started in the Hip-Hop game?

Razah: MY FIRST GROUP I CAME FROM WAS WITH 7TH AMBASSADOR CALLED DA LAST FUTURE WE HAD A SINGLE PRESSED UP WITH SUPREME INDEPENDENT CALLED LIVIN IN HELL B/ MENTAL KOMBAT AND WAS A CREW CALLED M.A.D. M.O.B. WHICH SHABAZZ WAS IN TOO FROM RED HOOK PROJECTS AFTER THAT THEN WE BECAME PART OF SUNZ OF MAN AND THAT ORIGINALLY WAS SHABAZZ, KILLAH, PRIEST, PRODIGAL SUNN, 60 SEC ASSASASIN AND 7TH AMBASSADOR SHABAZZ WAS A SOLO ARTIST AND SO WAS KILLAH PRIEST THEY WAS A GONNA BE A GROUP CALLED D.O.A. AND PRODIGAL HAD A PARTNER TOO AND 60 WAS REALLY BROOKLYN ZU WITH O.D.B. R.I.P. WE WAS IN THE STUDIO RECORDING SONGS ACTUALLY FOR ATLANTIC RECORDS WHICH WAS ON THAT ELEMENTS ALBUM. THAT ALBUM EXPLAINS THE BIRTH OF SUNZ OF MAN

As a MC in the group Sunz of Man, what was your experience like coming into the industry and being in the first group to sign to Wu-Tang Records?

Razah: FIRST COMING IN IT WAS ALL ABOUT JUST MAKING MUSIC AND FEELING GOOD ABOUT IT THAT WAS A BIG DEAL TO BE IN THE STUDIO PERIOD IT WAS SO MUCH TO LEARN FROM THEN ON TO NOW I WAS REAL YOUNG THEN AND WAS LIKE A SPONGE SOAKING UP EVERYTHING I CAN CAUSE IT WAS ALL NEW TO ME. WHEN WE FIRST GOT SIGNED WE DIDNT CARE ABOUT FAME WE WAS WRITING AND SHARPENING OUR SKILLS EVERYDAY WAS A CYPHER OR BUILDING. WE HAD TO UPHOLD THE FACT OF WHY WU-TANG SIGNED US AND NOT BE CORNY. WE HAD OUR OWN STYLE ALWAYS AROUND WU THATS WHAT MADE US DOPE WE HAD A WHOLE DIFFERENT STYLE THAT WAS FUTURISTIC BACK THEN.

The first music video for The Last Shall Be First was (LINK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GdlaRI-n3E) Shining Star featuring Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Earth, Wind & Fire. How did that collaboration come together?

Razah: WELL FIRST ME N PRIEST HAD DID THE ORIGINAL VERSION TO A RZA BEAT THAT WAS CRAZY SINGING THE HOOK OURSELVES THEN LATER THE LABEL WANTED THE WHOLE GROUP ON THE SONG AND A WU MEMBER ON IT AND WE HAD JUST MET WYCLEF N LAURYN HILL AND WE SAID LETS HIT UP WYCLEF TO PRODUCE IT AND ASKED DIRTY TO GET ON IT WITH US AND CATHY JONES FROM THE LABEL KNEW E.W.F. AND SAID SHE CAN REALLY GET THEM ON THE SONG BUT THEY DONT LIKE RAP BUT OUR LYRICS WAS DIFFERENT WE WAS LIKE A RAP VERSION OF E.W.F. THEY LISTENED TO US AND THEY GAVE US THE OK. WHAT WAS CRAZY WAS ODB DID GHETTO SUPERSTAR IN THE NEXT ROOM THAT DAY WIT MYA AND PRAZ WHICH CAME OUT THE SAME TIME AS OUR SONG CAME OUT AND KINDA OVERSHADOWED OUR SONG. ITS VIDEO FOOTAGE OF THEM REALLY TALKIN BOUT US WORKING TOGETHER AND ALL THAT CAUSE WE JUST MADE HISTORY NOBODY NEVER RECORDED ESPECIALLY IN HIP HOP WITH E.W.F. SO WE MADE HISTORY ALONE BY DOING THAT RECORD. NO ONE CAME IN THE DOOR LIKE THAT BUT US.

As a solo artist you’ve released albums including When All Hell Breaks Loose, Freedom of Speech, Renaissance Child, & Razah’s Ladder. Do you have a favorite solo album of yours so far?

Razah: SO FAR I SAY ALL OF THEM . HELL BREAKS LOOSE WAS SONGS THAT I WAS RECORDING FOR MY SOLO RECORD I WAS NEXT TO COME OUT AFTER SUNZ OF MAN ALBUM AND KILLAH PRIESTS HEAVY MENTAL WE WAS ALL GONNA DROP RECORDS BUT I WAS NEXT. THEN RED ANT WENT BANKRUPT IN THE MIDDLE OF OUR CAREER JUST GETTING STARTED. SO I FIGURED PUT IT OUT INDEPENDENTLY TILL I GET ANOTHER DEAL I HAD OFFERS FROM RAZOR SHARP AND GZA’S LIQUID SWORDS ENT BUT IT NEVER MANIFESTED SO I WENT UNDERGROUND WITH IT AND DID ALOT OF FEATURES TO BUILD MY NAME UP NOW FREEDOM OF SPEECH WE DID THAT IN 2 DAYS AT 4TH CRIB CAUSE WE ALWAYS HAD A GOOD CHEMISTRY FLOW AND WE DROPPED THAT INDEPENDENTLY TOO BUT THE LABEL BREACH THE CONTRACT ADDED SONGS AND RUINED THE ARTWORK AND WE GOT THE MASTERS BACK AND RERELEASED IT AGAIN OURSELVES WITH NEW ARTWORK. BUT I STILL FELT I DIDNT GET TO PUT OUT A HELL-RAZAH ALBUM AND I WAS STILL BUILDING UP ME INDIVIDUALLY NOT AS A GROUP MEMEBER AND THAT ALBUM HAD NO FEATURES JUST ME N 4TH, BEATS AND RHYMES, LIKE ERIC B N RAKIM. NOW RENIAISSANCE CHILD WAS MY FIRST REAL ALBUM THRU A LABEL AND HAD NU KEMIT WHO WAS INVOLVED WIT MASTA KILLA’S NO SAID DATE AND KILLAH PRIEST;S OFFERING ALBUM BEHIND IT AND WAS WORKING WITH OTHER ARTIST OUTSIDE OF THE WU TANG AND CREATING MY SOUND I WANTED THEN NEXT WAS RAZAH’S LADDER WHICH WAS BSBD DEAL WITH BABYGRANDE THEY WANTED TO COLLAB ON A PROJECT AND WE CREATED A MASTERPIECE RIGHT AFTER I JUST FINISHED RENAISSANCE CHILD AND MY FATHER JUST PASSED SO I WAS IN A ZONE THEN. THATS WHY THAT ALBUM MEANT ALOT TO ME. WHICH LEADS TO WHY IM DOING THIS NEXT ALBUM, ALL MY ALBUMS IS MY FAVORITE CAUSE EACH MEANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT HAPPENING IN MY LIFE AND CAREER AT THE SAME TIME. BUT I THINK THIS HEAVEN-RAZAH ALBUM IS MY BEST ALBUM ITS MY FAVORITE ALBUM ALREADY.

Who were all the members in the Maccabeez? Yall released a project called The Spooks Who Kicked Down the Doorz, will their be an official Maccabeez album?

Razah: MACCABEEZ GO BACK TO ME N PRIEST WE ALWAYS WORKED AND SOUNDED GOOD TOGETHER AND WANTED TO DO A PROJECT OR SOMETHING THAT WAS THE NAME FOR IT. THEN PRIEST LINKED WITH DADDY ROSE AND WAS GONNA DO IT WITH HIM THEN ROSE GOT LOCKED UP AND PRIEST CAME BACK TO ME WANTING TO DO IT AGAIN BUT EVERYTIME WE PLANNED TO DO IT SOME DISTRACTIONS COME TIMBO WAS ALWAYS THERE CAUSE ROYAL FAM AND SUNZ AND ROSE FAM WAS ALWAYS ROLLING SO NOW IT WAS ME TIMBO N PRIEST THEN WE GOT BACK WIT SHABAZZ AND DID A FEW SONGS WIT GODZ WRATH AND HAD THEM SITTING AROUND SO ME N TIMBO SAID LETS PUT OUT A MIXTAPE FOR THE FANS THATS HOW U GOT THAT PREVIEW OF THAT BUT ITS STILL SONGS FOR THAT PROJECT THATS JUST SITTING AROUND TILL THIS DAY.

Your also part of the group Black Market Militia, which included Tragedy Khadafi, Killah Priest, Timbo King, and William Cooper. Do you think their will be a new Black Market project?

Razah: BLACK MARKET WAS REALLY THE TITLE FOR MACCABEEZ THAT ME AND PRIEST HAD CAME UP WIT BUT IT BECAME THE GROUPS NAME AFTER PRIEST N TRAGEDY WAS PLANNING ON DOING A PROJECT TOGETHER SEE WILLIAM COOPER WAS WITH TRAGEDY AND ME N TIMBO WAS ALREADY MACCABEEZ SUNZ AND ROYAL FAM PUT IT TOGETHER YOU GET BLACK MARKET. I HEARD PRIEST N COOPER RECORDED SONGS FOR A PART 2 PLUS IT WAS SOME SONGS LEFT OVER WE DIDNT USE BUT NOBODY HIT ME UP BOUT NO PART 2 AND TRAGEDY IS LOCKED UP SO THATS SOMETHING I CANT ANSWER CAUSE I HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT BEING PART 2′S IM WORKING ON HEAVEN-RAZAH AND T.H.U.G. ANGELZ I THINK BLACK MARKET WAS A DOPE PROJECT AND DONT NEED A PART 2 SEE CERTAIN CLASSICS NEED TO BE LEFT ALONE.

You’ve teamed up with Shabazz the Disciple to form the duo T.H.U.G. Angelz. Can you explain the name T.H.U.G. Angelz? Also what can we expect from you and Shabazz in the future?

Razah: THE NAME MEANS ‘THOSE HUMBLED UNDER GOD’ OR ‘THOU HAST UNDERSTOOD GOD’ WHICH ARE THE ANGELZ WHEN YOU UNDERSTAND GOD AND YOUR PURPOSE IN LIFE YOU BECOME A VESSEL FOR ANGELZ TO WORK RIGHTEOUSNESS THIS IS NOT JUST A ALBUM LIKE BLACK MARKET WE REALLY A DUO WE DOING WHAT WE WANTED TO DO FROM DAY 1 WE CAME IN THE GAME TOGETHER AND JUST TAKING IT BACK TO OUR ROOTS AND DOING IT FOR OUR HOOD AND OUTTA LOVE THATS WHY WE STARTED OFF WITH WELCOME TO RED HOOK HOUSES WE WAS ALWAYS FROM BROOKLYN BUT OUR FANS THOUGHT ALL WU TANG IS FROM SHAOLIN NOW THE NEXT ALBUM IS GONNA DEFINE THE ANGELZ SIDE OF THUG ANGELZ THAT WAS THE THUG PART. EXPECT ALOT FROM US WE GOT HEAVEN-RAZAH BOUT TO DROP THEN THUG ANGELZ THEN SHABAZZ FIRST REAL SOLO RECORD AND BUILDING OUR BRAND AND LABEL, WE GOT CLOTHES, NEW GROUPS AND A DOCUMENTARY COMING TOO. SO WE JUST GETTING STARTED BACK UP FROM SCRATCH.

When is your new solo album, Heaven Razah, coming out? Also can you describe the concept behind this album…?

Razah: HEAVEN RAZAH WILL BE DROPPING BY THIS SUMMER I DIDNT WANNA RUSH THIS ALBUM AND THROW OUT ANYTHING. I WANTED TO MAKE A PURE CLASSIC. THE CONCEPT IS SIMPLE THIS IS JUST A MORE MATURE SIDE OF RAZAH THE FATHER, THE HUSBAND THE BUSINESS MAN THE MESSENGER OF GOD NOW PLUS THE CREATIVITY IS STRONG ON THIS ALBUM LYRICALLY AND MUSICALLY ARTWORK AND ALL. I WAS THINKING AS IF I WAS WRITING OR DIRECTING A MOVIE NOT JUST RAPPING THIS IS LIKE THE THEME OR SCORE TO MY LYRICAL MOVIE OF LIFE.

Who are some of the producers you worked with on Heaven Razah LP? Who are the features?

Razah: 4TH DISCIPLE, BRONZE, AYATOLLAH, GODZ WRATH, ALLAH MATH AND A FEW NEW PRODUCERS I BELIEVE IN THAT’S PART OF THE TEAM AND DEV 1 WHO DID RENAISSANCE ON RENAISSANCE CHILD HE BLESSED ME FOR THIS ALBUM. FAR AS FEATURES I DIDN’T WANT THAT TYPE OF VIBE I STUDIED CLASSIC ALBUMS AND THEY DIDNT HAVE A BUNCH OF FEATURES ALL OVER THE ALBUM WHICH MAKES A ARTIST HAVE TO REALLY PROVE HIS SKILL. WHICH WAS MORE OF A CHALLENGE FOR ME. I ONLY WORKED WIT 2 OR 3 PEOPLE ON IT THAT I FELT PLAYED A PART IN THE MOVIE I WAS CREATING.

What’s next for Hell Razah after the new album? What else should people be on the lookout for?

Razah: IM WRITING A MOVIE, WORKING ON A FEW ACTS BUILDING UP OUR BRAND AND LABEL AND GONNA CONCENTRATE MORE ON THE BUSINESS SIDE FOR A WHILE AFTER THESE PROJECTS DROP AND WORK WIT SOME NEW TALENT AND FOCUS ON OUR CLOTHES-LINE, RAZAH CODE 2 DVD, AND TOURING.

Out of these tracks you were featured on, which is your favorite one(s)? Killah Priest- Tai Chi, Killarmy- Wake Up, U-God- Pleasure or Pain, Ghostface Killah- We Made It, GZA- Hip Hop Fury, Method Man- Play IV Keeps…

Razah: THATS HARD….HHHMMMM I GOTTA SAY TAI CHI AND PLEASURE AND PAIN BUT THAT VERSE ON WAKE UP AND WE MADE IT WAS CRAZY TOO. I GOTTA STICK WITH TAI CHI.

Here are some more questions from your fans:

Are you going to work more with Blue Sky Black Death?

Razah:YES SIR

Will their be another Sunz of Man album?

Razah: AT THIS POINT I DONT THINK SO.

Is their a good quality version of “Mind as a Weapon”? Is it possible to get a mastered version..

Razah: ONLY ON CASSETTE THAT WAS SUPPOSE TO BE ON HEAVY MENTAL AND PRIEST NEVER USED IT THAT WAS A CLASSIC TOO IM A DIG THAT UP YA’LL NEED TO HEAR THAT

What is your current relationship with Killah Priest?

Razah: WE SPOKE AFTER THAT LAST INTERVIEW HE DID A FEW TIMES LYING AND TRYING TO SLANDER MY NAME AND MAKE HIS SELF LOOK GOOD BEFORE HIS ALBUM DROPPED BUT I WASNT FEELING THAT WE GO BACK TO FAR TO BE LOOKING LIKE 50 CENT AND GAME WHEN WE DEAL WIT KNOWLEDGE SO I HAD TO CALL HIM PERSONALLY NOT THRU KNOW INTERVIEW OR SONGS SHIT. WE GO BACK TO FAR TO BE LOOKING LIKE THAT. HE NEED TO GET THOSE CULTURE VULTURES AND BLOODSUCKERS AND YES MEN FROM AROUND HIM REGARDLESS IF HE FUCK WIT ME OR NOT. I KEEP A SMALL CIRCLE AND WITH THE SAME FAM SINCE DAY 1. THATS LIKE A BIG BROTHER TO ME REGARDLESS WE GOT LIKE 13 YEARS STRONG IN THIS RAP GAME WE LEARNED ALOT TOGETHER.

Whats up with the second Freedom of Speech album with 4th Disciple? is that still going to happen?

Razah: YEP I JUST HAD TO DELIVER THIS SECOND ALBUM TO NATURE SOUNDS FIRST WE ALREADY GOT A FEW SONGS DONE ALREADY ITS GOING TO HAPPEN.

As far as your wu affiliation goes, do you think it has helped or hindered your career as a solo artist?

Razah: IT HELPED ME IM A WORLDWIDE NAME I CAN GO PRACTICALLY TO ANY COUNTRY AND THEY KNOW MY MUSIC IN OTHER LANGUAGES AT THE SAME TIME ITS ALMOST LIKE YOU CAN NEVER GET OUT OF THE FACT OF ALWAYS BEING WU AFFLILATED ONCE YOUR PART OF A LEGACY WE WAS THERE AT THE GOLDEN ERA OF AN EMPIRE. THESE NEXT 2 ALBUMS WILL CLEAR THE AIR OF ALL THAT HAS BEEN HINDERED ANYWAY.

Would you work with Wu-Tang and Rza again if asked?

Razah: WHY NOT.

Can you explain what you said on Audiobiography about Nas biting yall style?

Razah: NAS GOT A TITLE FROM ONE OUR SONGS WE DID WITH RZA WHICH I HEARD LATER RZA GAVE IT TO HIM CALLED “AS IT WAS WRITTEN” WE DID AND LATER HE COMES OUT WITH IT WAS WRITTEN AND WASN’T EVEN ON THAT SUNZ OF MAN STYLE ON THAT ALBUM HE BEEN TAPPIN IN OUR CHAMBER WE WAS ALWAYS ON THAT STYLE THEY EVEN STARTED CALLING US HOLYCORE AT ONE POINT. LOOK AT THE SIMILARITY IN SUNZ OF MAN AND GOD’S SUN ITS OBVIOUS. HE NEED TO LINK UP WIT US AND STOP PLAYING.

If you were stranded on an island and could only have 3 things what would they be, and why?

Rumors fly that Residents of Red Hook Houses will have to leave after Repair Work

Red Hook Justice, PBS documentary The construction headquarters for Kel-Tech Construction lies enclosed in a dusty white patch of land surrounded by 15-foot-high chain linkfences and 16 red six-story publicly-subsidized apartment buildings in the heart of the Red Hook, Brooklyn. Kevin Gallagher, the burly head sub-contractor for the masonry project, has been working intermittently since 2003, when the New York City Housing Authority gave the green light to a $18.6 million dollar, multi-contract repair project. This project promised to clean the exterior surface of all the buildings, do brick-reconstruction work on damaged roof parapets, and conduct roof drainage repair and roof repair in the 26 buildings that make up the East and West wings of the Red Hook Houses.

Historically neglected by city services and skeptical about the competence or honesty of the New York Housing Authority, many of the 6000 plus residents, almost 70% of the total population of Red Hook, doubt the real objective of the repairs being done by Gallagher.

A 26-year-old former resident of Red Hook on parole for drug possession who refused to give her name says that the construction site is going to be turned into a holding cell, “to throw all us into.”
While the New York City Housing Authority did not respond to questions for this article, Dorothy Shields, the current and long-time President of the Red Hook East Tenants Association explains that the construction is a long overdue repair to buildings that were built in 1939. She dismisses people who distrust the New York City Housing Authority and the construction.

She emphasized that trust is vital in this situation. “Some people don’t trust nobody. In this world you have to trust somebody,” she exclaimed.

Vanessa Stanton, an office manager at a nearby community health organization, has reason to be distrustful. She is mystified by scaffolding that contractors put up outside her top-floor apartment a bit more than five years ago, only to take it down at the beginning of this year, without doing any apparent work.

The scaffolding began to accumulate urban detritus in the absence of workers: trash thrown from windows, leaves shed from trees as well as nests abandoned by families of squirrels.

Her roof still leaks, she says, even though she was one of the, “main complainers,” filing regular complaints at the New York City Housing Authority management office in Red Hook.

Shields, the tenant leader, admits discontent among tenants. “It’s true that a lot of people are unhappy with the construction,” she says, confirming an incident in which a woman she described as mentally disturbed, and the contractor described as a “crackhead,” poured boiling water on a bricklayer at 8:30 in the morning.

On any given day, drills loudly break apart old brick which is then thrown into metal dumpsters six-stories below. On the ground the gears of a fork-lift grind with effort and the pungent fumes of liquid tar float hot through the air.
For most people, the construction was not seen to be in their long-term benefit, even it was seen as effective.
Carmen Vasquez, 32, a four-year resident of the Houses, heard that the owners of the buildings, “…plan to take everybody out,” and offer an option to buy for currently employed residents.

“This is a lot of money they are spending on these building. They are cleaning the face of each and every building, each and every roof is brand new, and lot of the bricks with cracks in it,” are getting fixed, she said.

“I don’t think they are going to spend so much money if they are not going to have plans for it,” Vasquez said.
A couple walking their two pit bulls in an area normally covered in grass but now a spotty mess of tire tracks in dried mud declared their satisfaction with the roof repairs.

The 49-year-old woman readily ventured her opinion in Spanish, “They are doing a good job here.” She declined to give her name, citing current legal problems. “When it rained the water ran into my house and filled up my bedroom,” soaking all her belongings. Since the workers began, she has had no water damage.

But, despite the perceived good work of the construction crews, the couple doubts the end-motive for the construction. They have heard many rumors from acquaintances and even heard of the existence of a letter indicating that current residents would receive financial incentives, up to $3000 dollars, for vacating the apartments.

Jose Figueroa, 55, her partner, who has been coming to visit Red Hook from his home in Manhattan for the last six years, explains that the purpose of these repairs is to clean them up for rental to people who can afford the true market price of these apartments.

Publicly subsidized housing adjusts rental rates according to factors like monthly combined income and dependents.
Figueroa cited the skyrocketing value of the surrounding property, and last year’s heavily promoted New York City plan to restructure the remaining active piers of the Red Hook waterfront as evidence of the interest of the city to remove the current residents. Average home and condo values for the Red Hook zip code of 11231 is around $700,000, way above the New York City average of 259,000, and higher than three of four surrounding zip codes, according to 2000 census figures.

Red Hook Houses 1938

Speaking from the battered confines of his smoky, air-conditioned trailer, Kevin Gallagher estimates that his team has laid two and a half to three miles of brick walls. He is eager to finish by November. He is done with Red Hook.
Beyond the chain-link fences, the six-story buildings of the Red Hook Houses sprawl across the landscape interspersed

by tall, wispy trees blowing in the breeze and evenly filtering sunlight below. Over the last four years the sounds of construction has given way when the workers leave at 3:00 pm to the omnipresent sound of children playing in the multiple courtyard playgrounds, and occasional gun shots later at night.

The rumors about eviction have been going on for a lot longer, says Jerome Davis, a former resident and sports coach who was raised in the Red Hook Houses.
“The people [in the neighborhood] were saying those same things ten years ago,” he said.
